I’m taking an extended test drive in a 2017 F250 Crew Cab 4x4 with the 6.2 gas engine in it. Anything in particular I should be looking/listening for? It’s got 78,000 miles on it currently. I have been reading this forum and well as a few others and besides a ticking sound either from a relay or the manifold I haven’t found much in the way of actual common issues.
Rust, and if it's a dealer tell them to pop out the front 2 ignition coils and when they are all corroded inside tell them to replace them all with OEM and not aftermarket.
See if the front locking hub ***** rotate freely, if not no big deal. But if it is a dealership selling, see if they will replace them at no additional cost if they seem seized up.
Ask for any service records on it. Oil changes, air filters, brakes ex. Check the carpeting good for current water issues or past issues. If you have a shop near by see if you can pay for a 1/2 hour or an hour to have It put up on the lift and checked out.
All great suggestions so far. Some I thought about others I haven’t. It’s from a dealership and if it works out I’ll have the truck from Saturday afternoon until Monday after work so I’ll have plenty of time to check it out over the weekend.
Keep the suggestions coming. I’d love to have a great list to check out to ease my mind about making the jump. This will be a daily ride so not only will it cost more to buy but more in fuel to drive as well so I really want to make sure the truck is good to go.
Make sure the truck drives, brakes, steers, shifts and accelerates normally. Check all accessories for correct function. Check AC blows cold and heare blows hot.
If the seller is a Ford dealership, ask for an OASIS printout on the vehicle, which will show all warranty and dealership services.
It really depends on how much you want to look. Basically the suggestions are maintenence items.
Pull one of the plugs and see if they have been changed. If not see if you can split the difference of cost with dealer to do it.
Pull a front wheel off and see how much pad is left and if the rotor is gouged?
Does the oil look "fresh"?
Air filter clean?
If it has zerk fitting on the front ujoint of 4 wheel drive do they look like there has been greased recently?
Other than that it comes down to.....have you become emotional attached to the deal.
Had (2) 6.2 motors and they both clicked from day one, it was explained as an injector cycling sound, I guess
That dealer should be able to put it up on a rack for you one would think...78k is not a lot of miles if the history checks out
Pull the plug apart that's near the spare tire and check for water intrusion. Well known issue and will cause all kind of weird gremlins you'd never expect. Things with brake pedal application, HVAC control issues and power window operation. Happened to me with a 2017 that I bought new and was not very old when the issues began.
