Can anybody help me? About 2 weeks ago I was driving home from work. When I stopped at a red light and when I got a green light it felt like the clutch was slipping. The tach would rev up while the speedo was slow to increase. I took it to the transmission shop and was told I needed a new clutch. When I picked it up (927.00 later) it still drove the same. 1st to15mph@ about 3200rpm 2nd to 25mph@ about 3500rpm 3rd to 40 mph @ 3500rpm so now I was wondering if it could be a sensor that is causing my problem. (98 ranger 3.0L eng 5 speed)
Welcome to FTE smurfit5241. The guages are telling you one thing and they seem to be wrong? Without looking at the guages, does the truck sound and feel like it's slipping?
No! it seems to run fine. Other than the fact that I have to shift to 2nd at 15mph and to 3rd at 25mph because the engine revs up so fast now. I actually have wheel spin in 1st gear.
I am confused, first you say it feels like your clutch is slipping, but then you say you are getting wheelspin. Trust me, if your cluth is slipping, you arent going to get tire spin.
It sounds to me like you had a bad clutch before. After they replaced it, you are just giving it too much gas and spinning the tires. Spinning tires = rpm shooting up high.
I have a manual also on my 3.0 V-6 and your shift points are in line with mine(2nd at 15mph ; 3rd at 25mph). A few months back i thought my clutch was slipping also because every now and then it would seam my engine was reving more than my truck was accelerating. Well, it just got worse and worse and a couple days later my check engine light came on and it turned out to be a faulty DPFE sensor(part of the egr system). Got a new DPFE installed and everything was fine. Newer engines use a plastic DPFE's because the older metal ones, like the DPFE's on your truck and mine, were prone to going bad. You can do a forum search on DPFE and find lots of info about it and where it is. If you locate yours and find that it is in fact metal, you should go ahead and change it out yourself...it is very simple to do. Dont make the same mistake i made and get the dealer to do it for $200.

The high rpm's that we are turning could be caused by the gear in the rear diff. I know that there are 2 types in rangers and one has a higher gear than the other. I dont have a tach in my truck so i dont know the exact numbers but when im on the interstate doing 75+...shes screamin! let us know what the problem is when you get it back smurfit.
Got my truck back and they said they checked with ford and that my shift points were where they are suppose be. And I was told to I should be shifting between 2500 and 2800 rpm. Was going to check to see if I might be able to program the computer to change my shift point. Because if I shift to soon it bogs the engine down
In a manual tranny, YOU determine the shift points...not a computer. Only with auto trannys can you add a performance chip to change the shift points. The only way to change your shift points with a manual is to change your rear end or transmission gearing.
Hey I have a 94 2.3 and wondering if anyone knows what the redline is and where your supposed to shift. On my truck as soon as I get to about 2000rpm my truck sounds like its redlining. Is this right. I see people saying they shift at like 3200rpm's and stuff. My truck wont even go that high it just stops at about 2500rpm's. Also my idle is only about 500rpm's. is this right. If not can you give me some ideas of what you think it might be. Thank's

Sounds to me that your tachometer is inaccurate and the engine is probably pulling higher RPM's than the tach is reading.
