After 8.5 hours of instruction, I soloed tonight. I completed my three takeoffs and landings fairly uneventfully. I then asked to do a touch and go followed by a full stop (which was granted by my instructor) and finally putting the plane away.
Congrads - now you can see the rest of the world in a matter of hours. Whats next? Night flying? if you ever want to take a trip to Calgary or Red Deer, let us know. Sounds like an adventure!!:-)
Congratulations Dan!
That's just about the time I had when I solo'd.
After the flight, my instructor cut off my shirt tail, as was the tradition. Then I put my name and the date on it and he hung it on the wall along with all the other students shirt tails. I don't know where that tradition came from, but he was retired Air Force, so maybe it's something military pilot's did.
Keep us posted when you make your first cross-country!
My instuctor is a very professional person. That doesn't read right reading it but he really worked well with me. He didn't some out and cut my shirt or douse me with water. A handshake and congratulations was all that was needed for me.
New pilots in the Air Force (Army Air Force?) were referred to as 'shave tails'. It does referr to cutting the tail of the shirt. I don't know much more about it. It might have a practical origin IE with early aircraft a long shirt tail could interfere with some of the equipment used. Or it could be that enlisted men were issued long tailed shirts and officers given short tails. Anyone else?
