Trailer TPMS sensor programming

We’ve used the Ford factory trailer TPMS/camera since we bought our F350 in 2017. It has worked great, the only issue being one of the sensors is intermittent, but still worked 85% of the time. Recently upon deciding to replace the trailer tires I purchased a new sensor from the local Ford dealer. The tire dealer called to ask how they were to be programmed so I called the Ford dealer & was told they were self learning. So of course I start home and that sensor isn’t working. Call the Ford dealer back. Now I’m told they are easily activated by the “scanner every tire shop uses”. I relayed the information to the tire shop because they also installed the wrong tires & were in the process of changing them out. Apparently they didn’t get the message because we are now on our trip & that sensor is still not working. Anyone know what needs to be done to get the sensor to function? Doesn’t seem like it should be difficult but somehow it’s not getting done. Thanks!

I just switched my winters to summers yesterday and it took 40 + minutes and one turn of the key to off and start again for the light to go off on my truck that was on because I lowered the PSi in the winters and for the PSi reading to change to the "new" wheels PSi...

I tried to find the procedure in the manual, but didn't look too hard. As I recall, the relearn procedure is initiated from the trailer screens. You then let out about 5 PSI from each tire, one at a time, to activate the sensor. The truck will honk when it recognizes the sensor. You have to program all four. Start with the driver/front tire.

Try this video. you may need to reprogram all trailer tires, but, I would anyway if I just put all new tires on it anyway.

Hope this helps.

It is pretty easy. For what it's worth, it took more than 5 psi in my tires to get the horn signal. Quite a bit more as I recall. I was glad I had a portable compressor on hand to air them back up.

Good luck!

Ken, agreed. I had to go down 10 psi or more on a couple tires. I did this at home where my big compressor is.

Next time I have to do the relearn on the trailer tires (it's been 5+ years since I did it last time) I'm going to try to activate the trailer sensors with a tool instead of releasing air.

I have also run into the problem where I can't let air out of the valve stem fast enough and the relearn process times out. $13 well spent -

It even works on the wife's Mazda CX-5.

Ran thru the learning process twice. First time it timed out because I was slow. Second time no problem because I had a helper & didn’t have to walk back & forth between the truck & trailer. 2 of the tires lost less than 10 pounds, 2 lost more than 10 pounds. Pumped them back up & everything went great. 2 hour trip & all four monitors worked. Thanks to all for your help!

I'm just now looking to go this route. I know my 2017 dually's panel lists the trailer tpms as an option under the towing screen but, I can't find any info on it at all in the manual. Will this feature accommodate a three axel 5th wheel (6 tires) and, if so, do you by any chance have the tpms part numbers so I can by them in prep for getting new tires this spring?

Yep, it’ll support a 6 tire setup. I buy my sensors here because they have harnesses and sensors etc on hand. https://nicholsmanufacturingandweldingservices.com/

Note that there are two sizes of sensors, so it’s good to look up the rims specs to know which valve stem diameter you need.

I used this tool to reset the TPMS when I had my 2019 F250. Worked great.

^^ This is correct, and Nichols seems to be the go-to source. The only thing I'd add is that I was able to measure/verify the valve stem hole size on the rim itself.
