I'm stuck. Put 460 back together with new (same as last time) Melling oil pump and Morroso driveshaft. They worked okay last time. Thought for sure the driveshaft was inside the bore of block that distributor shaft goes. When I went to prime engine, found out that driveshaft was not inside female hex of pump. Tried to carefully lift with magnet and drop into hex, but got it stuck. Cannot seem to get it inside bore of block. Tried bent wire, magnets, tapping on top with punch, etc. No luck.
Does anyone have any ideas? I sure don't want to disconnect headers, motor mounts, tranny mount, etc. and lift engine, and remove oil pan, etc. I just went through that, and what a pain, especially doing it in the driveway!
Is there any trick to installing these shafts? Also, installing the distributor is a real job, cause the driveshaft is always off to one side, and won't engage. I have packed it with grease to keep it kind of centered in the bore until it engages distributor. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks much.
When you installed the oil pump shaft from below did you use the press-on keeper that keeps it from being pulled out through the distribuor bore housing (and falling into the pan)? All I can think of is that keeper is too far down on the shaft to let the shaft engage the oil pump.
Hi, Georgedavila,
Thank you for your reply. I did adjust the press on keeper to what I thought was the correct distance to allow the shaft to engage in the pump and to be retained so that it would not be pulled out when removing the distributor. I must have made a mistake, though. If you (or anyone else) has experienced this problem and has a possible solution, I would be most greatful. As soon as this problem is solved, I am an hour away from firing her up!
I've never experienced that exact problem. I have a 460 in a Bronco, which requires the engine to be pulled to drop the pan and had an oil pump go bad. I jacked the engine up to the firewall tunnel and was able to drop the pan enough to get one hand in ro R&R the oil pump. Wish I could offer a better solution.
