I am new to the board and a first time Ford owner. I have just bought an older ford that I want to use thru out the winter, and wear I live the winter is most of the year. The question I have is that my new (1987) Ranger starts fine, idles fine, but when you are driving (mostly over 40+) she’ll sputter then the gas kicks back in and she picks up speed again. Now for the past two days I have been reading posts on many web sites and I think the problem is fuel or O2 related. When I bought the truck 3 days ago the guy I bought it from informed me of this problem and said he tried fixing it by replacing the O2 sensor, and then gave up. So if the O2 sensor is new that leaves fuel. I have read that I may need a special tool for this and that I need to bleed the fuel line? Is this a task that anyone can handle or should send it out to get fixed? Could the problem also be the fuel pump? As you can see from the post I have no Idea on where to start to narrow it down. Any help would be great and much appreciated. Thanks for thanking the time to read this post.
Welcome to FTE Mid-NightSmoker. You bought it, you own it. First, you have to figure out where the regular maintenance is at. Oil, lube and all of the filters. Next, do a visual inspection on all the ignition components. If everything looks up to speed, then you could do/have done a fuel pressure test. And it just goes on and on. Test, don't guess.
Sounds a lot like carb icing. At 40 degrees, if there is moisture in the air (rain, car in front of you kicking up a mist) the carb can ice up and the engine runs rough or even quits. Usually after a few minutes, engine heat will melt the ice and off you go. Check to see if the heat manifold from exhaust to air cleaner is intact. This sends heated air to the carb to prevent icing. Of course, if your engine is injected, disregard all the above!!!
