2011 Ford Fle . . . . errr . . . ummm . . . Explorer with 158,000 miles on it. The transfer case is making a lot of noise, so it's probably about to go bad like they do. It looks like the same model transfer case was an option all the way to 2019. It also looks like another version of this same case was offered from 2013 to 2019 with an oil cooler. The oil cooler appears to be a minor change to the passenger side cover of the existing case, cooling the case and therefore the oil with coolant passing through.
Side note: using 195+ degree coolant to cool this PTU tells me how hot that thing must get under there!
My question: Are the old (non oil-cooler) and new (with oil-cooler) versions of the transfer case interchangeable?
If so, I'd love to replace my failing 2011 factory unit with the 2016+ unit that has the oil cooler and the drain plug.
