2003 EXP 5.4 w/rear AC, 183k miles. Replacing the compressor due to failed clutch coil. It appears the compressor was replaced once before, as the replacement coil doesn’t fit. That would have been prior to my owning 100k miles ago. I’m not sure what other system parts would have been change. The system worked fine up until the coil failed, so no catastrophic failure.
I have the tools to do, but don’t do this professionally or that often. Besides the compressor, should I change any other components?
I would base my opinion on the condition of the orifice tube. It's essentially an inline filter and catches all debris if any and will give you a good indication of internal system integrity. If it's clean, simply replacing the compressor is likely the only thing needed so long as you can pull a solid 28-30" vacuum for at least an hour after you close the system.
If it has any debris at all, a full system flush and new accumulator will be needed and of course you won't want to reinstall the old orifice in any case, replace it.
