My 71 F100 stock 360V8 has swelling problems in the radiator hoses after operating 10-15 minutes. The top hose is significantly hotter than the bottom hose and both are tight as a drum skin and swell up to twice the normal size. Have less than 100 miles on rodded out and serviced radiator w/ new cap, top and bottom hoses and new thermostat. All stock vehicle w/ prox 60k miles on rebuilt motor. Instrument temp gauge does not indicate over-
heating. All belts, water pump, power steering pump, etc. visually
appear to be operating correctly and engine oil is clean with no signs of discoloration or moisture. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks- terry-m@sbcglobal.net
Replace those belts! They should not grow AT ALL! I'd suggest going to Napa or other comparable store and getting a set of their radiator hoses, I think your's are shot.
What pressure cap are you running on your radiator? I'm running a 7psi cap with a reserve tank reclaimed from an old Bronco 2.
Might have a bad thermostat even though it is new. Take it out and put it in a hot (180 degree) pot of water. See if it opens. If it is bad it won't open, the pump is trying to pump and is only building pressure.
Hmmm well hot top cooler bottom tells me that it's not completely warmed up. I have a camper special radiator supper big top tank 4 row core with a 180 thermostat it takes longer than that for mind to get up to 170, plus a clutch fan and shroud. and a 13lb cap. You may have a head gasket compression leaking in to your
cooling system. FE blocks where great for that. You will see all those little bubbles in the water with your cap off. Also you must have a air space, not to over fill to radiator when cold if you don't have a recovery system and you have a 13-16lb cap wheres that hot water going to go to??? hoses may get FAT=BIGGER. If this all checks out good take it and have it for a bad head gasket.
Hope this was helped you in some way
