I say buy that 6.4L PowerStroke diesel F250. Nothing safer than a vehicle that disables itself on a routine basis and will require much father son time repairing and creating lasting memories. Just think of all those times (very few) you see your son leave the driveway in his truck and think I hope he returns safe, no worries 6.4L PowerStroke already had a planned malfunction for 3 miles down the road that day but neither of you were aware. You get a phone call and think the worst, but it turns out he just needs a ride back home because the truck broke down. You happily pick him up enjoying your time together knowing he's safe and this becomes your routine father son time until you both decide the 6.4L belongs as a yard ornament that you can both sit in front of and share the memories of the few times it was drivable and all the time you spent together because of it.
Geez, ok thanks for the kids words this Sunday. Hope you got a kick out of typing that all up!

I take it you are unaware of the 6.4L diesel engine used in the Ford trucks and the joke went right over your head. The model year trucks you proposed 05-10 had the two most problematic diesel engines ever offered in a Ford pickup and both those engines top the list of most problematic diesel engines produced. The Ford/Navistar partnership was terminated because of the 6.0L and 6.4L diesel engines produced for Ford by Navistar.

The joke is you want your son in a safe vehicle, well one thats always broken and hardly drivable wont give him much chance to be on the road in an accident of any sorts.

That’s why I posted my original question because I knew they had some issues. I received some great kind feed back which I appreciate and I’ll steer clear of those engines. Exactly what a forum should look like.
Thanks for taking time on this fine Sunday to spread your kindness!

I bought my daughter a 2007 RAV4 from my sister in law. Has 185K on it. Runs good, drives good, just developed a phasing rumble that I am trying to figure out and could possibly be a bad Ujoint on the drive shaft ($300), or an imbalance in tire presssures, 40 in one, 20 in another, 22 and 30. Since its basically an AWD, the imbalance might be the issue. It's little things like this to keep in mind. The Toyota is CHEAP to repair, a Super Duty is not. For what the ball joints and trackbar cost on the Superduty I replaced the entire suspension on the RAV. The RAV only cost me $2K but needed new tires, struts, needs a new slip clutch in the rear and now possible the drive shaft.

If you son wants a diesel there's always the 7.3 powerstroke trucks, they are cheap, and can be fixed easily although with some miles but they will run for ever once you address the old parts, great learning experience for you and your kid.
Just expect to spend some $ here's a just a few I saw this morning on market place.

Below 5k they will need some work as one poster posted. These trucks are turn key with minor work needed or cosmetic stuff
