We replaced the ignition switch in my son's 85 F250 today and the new unit came with this little bent wire bale thingy...
It obviously can't stay where it is (shown on the old switch which didn't have it) because it blocks the plug. So what is it for? We couldn't figure out what to do with it so we left it off.
BTW, it wasn't faulty and it was wasted effort. The culprit is a broken steering wheel lock actuator.
When it's in place, that clip locks the switch into one particular position (acc or run or....? I can't remember which). When it's locked in that position, you engage the rod & then bolt the switch to the column with the key tumbler in the corresponding position....lastly remove the clip.

Well... that makes sense then, don't it.
An installation tool!
There were two of us and we got it in working together, but now l can see where that would save a lot of frustration.
Great! Having parts left over makes me a little crazy, especially if l can't figure out what they do.
Thank you.
