I have a 2001 Ranger and the rear axle the bearing just chewed it up on the drivers side. I noticed when I was under it the check valve on top of the axle was plugged. I noticed the oil seal was gone it was leaking oil would that eventually eat the axle because of low oil because of breather being plugged Tks in advance folks looking for some help
It is possible, bearing wear could cause the seal to leak and damage the axle, keeping the vehicle in service without checking the oil levels could have caused damaged also. There should have been noise associated with this problem, but it really doesn't matter damage is done now the fixin comes.
One note that might help on your repair, if the axle damage is to bad you can get what is called a repair bearing. It moves the contact point to a different area of the axle. It is much wider, and the bearing and seal are 1 unit. I have used these several time with success.
Good luck Mike/Ez
I was changing the parking brake shoes yesterday, and it appears My vent was nonoperational also. I overpacked the axle bearings when installed, so it puked a little grease out past the seal. No damage but a good reason for the brake not to work.. Mike/Ez

You packed the rear wheel bearings with grease? What model axle is that? I just replaced the axle shafts and bearings on my 7.5 axle and the service manual stated to put gear oil on the bearings prior to installation. They are (kept) lubricated by the gear oil in the differential.
