That box is obviously marked as a SS558. As stated earlier, it is a ground trigger solenoid. What happens if you take the ground wire you added to the solenoid mount and instead touch it to the small terminal? This should crank the engine successfully (and start it if the ignition is switched on). If that test works successfully, simply ensure the input to your starter button is a ground and not a power lead. You're good to go.
You can also try the aforementioned SS571 if you are sure your starter button is power and not ground fed and don't want to change the feed to the starter button.
Unbelievable! Directional solenoid + ground trigger! It would really help to have details included in the package or at least marked on the unit. Thanks for everyone's help. I have been dealing with this off and on for a year.
What is ridiculous is that I had to rewire the starter button for my 48 for hot trigger solenoid. Now I have the correct one for the 48 on the 53 and the correct one for the 53 on the 48.
Interesting thing is that the stock 48 starter button can't be rewired to accept a power feed as it only has one terminal that gets wired to the solenoid. The starter button is fed from grounding of itself to the dash.
