2002 Ranger XLT 4x4 with 4.0L V6 and 5-Speed manual transmission. I was driving home on the freeway yesterday when all of a sudden the engine stopped running. I noticed a sudden loss of power, pushed in the clutch and the tach went to zero, let out the clutch again to attempt to jump start the engine, to no avail, then coasted off the freeway around the corner and parked it. Once parked I looked under the hood and everything seemed to be in place and properly connected. I attempted to start the engine and it would happily turn over but never sparked up to actually start. The little truck had been running fine prior to this but now nothing. Any thoughts?
50/50 Test, spray StartingFluid into IntakeManifold:
* If engine starts & runs for a few seconds, you've got spark but no fuel flow: fuel pump \ fuel filter \ fuel injectors \ ...
* If engine does not start, you've got an ignition problem.
Most of those 4.0l rangers will be still sparking in the junkyard in a hundred years
Meaning the EDIS modules are damn near indestructable
Your coil pack may have failed, but no spark on all cylinders is a reach
You need to check the codes and the CKP sensor
There are timing gears in that 4,0 and no belt
That does not mean the top gear (which may have plastic teeth) has not failed
Do a compression check on a few cylinders, that is going to be the easiest way to check the gearset on yours
No timing belt on 4.0L SOHC.
Could be broken harness wire to coilpack or injectotrs; wouldnt be first time that has happened.
Yep, check for OBD2 TroubleCodes.
