my 93 ranger (2.3L, 4cyl.) suddenly stopped starting. does
have louder clicking noise, but no turn over. removed starter and had it tested...starter good. did the jump across the post on the starter and it turned over. was told that it may be starter relay or neutral safety switch. got new starter solenoid and installed on fender. still won't turn over. purchased neutral safety switch but cannot locate the old one to replace it. was told to look on clutch pedal (not there) then was told to look on transmission (difficulty). was told something about a kick lever removal or something. could someone explain to me like i'm a moron (which i'm feeling like) where to find this neutral safety switch so that i can replace it? does this sound like it is the problem? it is a manual that i can jump start and pop the clutch start, but i can't rely on that. HELP!!
Welcome to FTE dr.f. All to often the simple answer is the correct answer. Are you getting a single "louder" click? Some guys would say that the single louder click was a locked starter. Poor battery connections will do the exact same thing. I like to prove that point to anybody present by using booster cables to bypass the battery cables. Are your battery cables and clamps up to speed? Did you already test them?
i don't believe it's a battery problem. the battery is only two months old, and all the while that the truck doesn't start, the lights, radio, and door chimes are all in working order.
Had a similiar problem with my 94 3.0. Got a buddy who rebuilt starters in the army. After an exhaustive parts replacement I found out it was from the electrical relay and solenoid on starter itself. Starter has one large cylinder and smaller one on the side, the small one lets the unit engage and disengage. If that goes up the starter will test fine, but not operate. Sometimes you can clean them up, more often you have to replace starter.
