Hello,
I've got a buddy who recently bought an 83 F250 w/460 & C6, it's a very nice truck in most every way, but the xfer case won't shift into 4low. The truck has a 4" lift and has 35" tires. I don't know which xfer case it has.
We checked the linkage and didn't find any obvious problems, lubricated the pivot points in the linkage and had no luck. It will shift from 2hi to 4hi and into neutral, it doesn't feel like it's hitting anything solid, it just won't slip into 4low.
I told him that he's lucky he's got the 460 so he can muscle through some of the things me and my 302 need 4low for, but he would like it to work right and I am out of ideas.
We haven't checked fluid level in the xfer yet, I didn't see any sign of leaking. Previous owner didn't take it off road too much so 4low probably hasn't been used in a while.

I just rebuilt my BW 13-56. The only thing I could possilbly see in your problem would be the 4L shifter fork. It rides on the outside of the shifter cam. It could be broken or jammed. The 4L lock hub is real heavy duty and I don't think that would be the problem unless the springs are broken. Either way, if you drain the fluid out, look for metal contamination. The only real way to find out would be to disassemble the unit and inspect it.
If you go into it, be sure to look at the pump support bracket that engages into the case. That's where my problems started. It broke and allowed the pump to spin with the shaft and subsequent lack of lubrication.
