Purchase Excursion or ? ? ?

Currently own a '01 150 S-Crew 4x4 and love it to tears!...Awesome build, no problems at all with it.
Issue: I need more room to haul stuff and family and tow.
4 kids + two adults + two irish setters + gear + dirt bike trailer with 5 bikes....well......the S-crew in people space alone gets maxed quick. (not to mention I can only haul a total of 5 at anyone time)

Questions to the all knowing Excursion forum:
With the Excursion being discontinued in a year + would you still purchase one?
Looking at some used 00 and 01s....any big issues with them? (I have reasearched this and cant seem to find anything other than ones and twos "issues" with these trucks)Appears that owners love em!
Recommendations on motor (PDS or Gas V10)

Reading all the threads here and with me commuting (freeway) about 40 miles total per day then haul/play on weekends....thinking that Gas V10 is my leaning (gas is 1.09 here, diesel bout 1.49) and I dont haul real heavy loads (trailer is at 2K total weight loaded). Not decided yet, and looks like local dealers are hungry to move vehicles here in the Pac NW!...fingers crossed

Thanx ahead of time for any input!

HR

Purchase Excursion or ? ? ?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Dec-02 AT 02:19 PM (EST)]My X is the first Ford product i have ever owned, and for the most part i dont regret my purchase. My truck has around 14k miles on it , and the only real issues i have had other than changing the belt at 12k , was the transmission. As far as i know , the auto trans is the weak link on all super duty/excursions. Other than that , i would reccomend picking one up.And this is said to be solved with the new trucks having the new toqure-shift trans. available

Purchase Excursion or ? ? ?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Dec-02 AT 03:32 PM (EST)]When will the 2004's show up in the showroom? I want to trade my 2000 for a 2004 when they become available. I purchased this one at the end of a model year and didn't have much to choose from. With the end in site I want to be early this time.

Also...any navigation systems going to be offered as OEM?

Thanks.

You have to drive a lot of miles or pull a really big trailer to justify a PSD.

I just traded in my 99 SD PSD for an '03 Excursion. My '99 SD cost me $27,500 in May '98, and they gave me $18,600 trade-in (honest dollars, I bought the new truck on X-Plan, no games there). No way my '03 X is going to hold that kind of value, but I do not care. I use my X to pull my car trailer on long weekend trips. I drive 12 hours at a stretch. In my SD, my wife was stuck in the front passsenger seat for that whole time, couldn't move. I went to the X to give us both more room inside to move around. I also like the 44 gallon tank (my SD had a 30 gallon tank) and the smoother, quieter ride. For me, even with the extra money, it was a no-brainer.

I too had a 2001 S'crew. Loved that truck. Rode great. Smooth and quiet. Build quality was incredible. Solid as granite, so squeaks or rattles. If they even put a diesel in that, I will consider trading out my X.

Starting to do some digging.
found a very very clean '00 4x4 limited, with 46K miles on it with the V10 and they are asking 26,995 (but they appear to be hungry!)

Good?
Bad?
bout average?

thanx!

I bought my 00 V10 XLT about a year and a half ago for $23 and had way less miles than that.

If you like the truck, start bartering. If it were me, I'd offer $21,500 and go from there.

Welcome to the forum!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Dec-02 AT 09:01 PM (EST)]Dealer emailed me back on the red '00 limited 4x4 with the V10....
44k miles...said they are asking $24 "on the internet" LOL

of course that is before I go there....and start rolling on the carpet on price...

seems a bit more competitive price wise....

Get it. I just got a 2000 X Ltd V10 4x4 with 45K miles about a month ago. I love the room and ride. For a 3/4 ton it rides great. I plan on getting a utility trailer (maybe 5x10 or so) soon to use for hauling mulch or something that won't fit in the back. I paid $25000 for mine. After reading here I should have pressed a little more I guess. But here in Texas most people like big vehicles and even Excursions don't sit too long. I'm pretty sure it was a lease vehicle. I immediately had the tranny fluid changed and will change the transfer case and front diff soon. I'm trying to make sure I know when the fluids were changed so I have a baseline. I doubt the previous owners ever changed anything except the motor oil.

The V10 is a great choice in the X. It moves along with athority. I usually drive granny style unless I'm getting into traffic. I would be a little nervous buying a used Power Stroke. You don't know if the previous owner ever cooled down the turbo or changed the fuel filter or put in the FW-16 coolant additive or..... I disagree with most guys about the PSD being a good used buy. I'd be nervous buying one unless I knew how it was treated. It is harder to hurt a gasser under normal use. The PSD was probably used hard and put up wet. I love the diesel mileage and power (my dad has a 2000 PSD F250) but I just can't justify one right now. Maybe the new 6.0 will sway me some day.

Sorry for the novel. Good luck.

HR -

For your intended use and carrying needs, I think you are spot-on with
needing an X vith the V10. You can't go wrong with that engine and
carrying capacity - go for it!!

(even Monsta's sister would agree... but that's another story.... )

Well the red 2000 limited had some issues...
been rode hard, and towed hard....44k miles and the towing receiver retainer pin hole was almost a complete oval...some serious slamming on that one, hole was bigger than anything I had seen on any dedicated tow vehicle, lots of other wear on the vehicle as well throughout the truck.
Real sloppy brand new undercoat and when you touched it in the wheel wells, chipped off in chunks...and appears there is rust.
Left passenget door had rust in the inside...etc etc....so...I walked.
something just didnt seem right....rear tailgate doors had serious load grooves in the tracks and doors didnt close worth a darn....sigh.

New one on the radar...an 01, lease turn in, only 23k miles, almost showroom condition, V10 limited 4x4....so still on warranty etc, and they are "Asking" 27,900, prior to a good showdown with me!
Car sales are way down up here in Washington state, so I might be able to do the nab it at end of month + december + sales down....we will see!....

ah the search is almost as much fun....but wife is ready for the hunt to be over!...she loves the Excursion!...so...hey 1/2 the battle right there!
