oh yea and when it does this it smell like old gas kinda like varnish , its wierd !!!
thanks lee
I can only go with the obvious. Fuel filter, TFI, TPS?, air filter. Then into speculation; vacuume operated fuel pump relay, cracked distributor cap? Not sure about the old gas/varnish smell, since I'm sure it isn't old gas, is it?
thanks ken and pozner , no it isn't old gas and i don't know about the black smoke but i will drive it and look and see ,the tfi module what exactly is that , were is it located , is it something i can change easily ?
thanks lee
My 87 BII was doing the same thing. Replaced the TFI and still would die. Had the stator replaced and hasn't died since (about two months ago). Ford dealer said they replace the stator when replacing TFI, if stator is worn it can send confusing signals to TFI and engine will quit. You might want to consider changing the stator too.
I'll throw my suggestion out to you, for what it is worth. Mine would do the same thing, including smelling like old gas, "lean condition". Do you have fuel at the intake when this happens? If not you might have the same problem I had, either a faulty connection at the external fuel pump or a bad fuel pump. I tried everything, replaced everything and was about to give up when I realized the obvious had escaped me, after a quick check of the fuel cert on the intake I realized I had no fuel pressure. And the condition was non consistant because it was a bad connection. a new connector later and no further problems.
