This 2022 F350 Lariat is my 3rd 6.7 so I should know better. I only have 1500 miles on the truck but am leaving Thursday for a 4000 mile trip , at least 3000 miles pulling a 11000 pound 5th wheel. I decided to change to 5/40 Rotella. The oil filter went fine, loosened he filter and punched hole and took off the oil fill cap. Then I took off the oil pan fill plug knowing it spurts a stream straight back , I held a large drain container up behind the plug. Oil shot out over the top, on me,my shirt and on the garage floor. After cleaning the mess up I installed the fumoto valve that I had ready. I’ll never understand why Ford doesn’t put the drain plug in the bottom of the pan. And oh yes I discovered the “ plastic “pan on my10 speed.

If I was a betting man, I would bet the Ford engineer who designed that oil pan has never changed their own oil and the 6.7PSD is not the only oil pan design with this same feature.

Totally agree. Oil drain plugs should always point down.

Guess I won't ask you to come over and do my oil change tomorrow then...
This is nothing new. Most drain plugs have been this way for 30+ years. I use a 5-gallon oil or painter's buck for oil changes on my SD. Never makes a mess.

Same here. 5gal bucket, throw a lid on it and haul it to AdvanceAuto to dump it.
A 5 gallon bucket won’t slide under my running boards, so I use two 2 gallon buckets. One under the oil filter and one near the drain pan. The Fumoto makes it a lot easier too.
I drive my truck up a set of home made ramps (railroad ties) to raise the front, open the Fumoto valve and no issues...the oil will drain to the rear of the pan once elevated, plus I have more room under the truck for the bucket.
I would strongly suggest not changing your oil yourself. Here is why I say it with personal experience from Ford. After a coolant hose change by my dealer on my 6.7 in 2012 it started blowing white smoke. The truck was towed to the dealer and upon arrival, the service manager started the truck to move it into the shop while moving the truck a piston and rod shot thru the block.
The truck was under warranty. A few days later still waiting to see if Ford was going to replace the motor, Ford asked for service records (ones not on file with Ford Service). I had always changed my own oils in the trucks. Ford denied my claim for a new motor because I did not have receipts for regular oil changes. The dealer principal stepped in and supported me. I have been purchasing vehicles there for 30 years.
Ford approved the claim but told me they will not support it again without proper service documentation. Since 2012 I have not changed my own fluids 10K plus installation is a lot to put out.
I prefer to sit in a cramped waiting room with a sniffling obese person wearing sweatpants playing a game on his phone while listening to the sound of demonic women on The View streaming thru the TV overhead while a meth addict changes fluids on my $60k truck that will explode if he gets it wrong so that I can lose 45 minutes of my day for $200.

I feel you. Just did my 7.3L gasser oil change last night. The initial stream is basically straight back. I'm sure the diesel has way more pressure (14 qts in the 6.7L vs the 8 qts in the 7.3L). I was ready for it....
My 2018 F-150 with the 5.0L (9 qts) had the front sway bar that went right across the oil drain path. My first oil change on that truck resulted in what seemed like an 'Exxon Valdez' size oil spill in my garage. Think cow and a flat rock. haha. I made a special tool to route the oil under the sway bar after that fun.

Just a word of warning
Totally illegal, and a good lawyer would just love to take on a case like that.
You are totally within your rights to do your own maintenance, all you have to do is show receipts for the oil and filters.
Ford would have to prove your owner maintenance caused the failure.
