The front one is likely a true widow maker as it doesn't appear to have a split lock ring. I would want a peek from the opposite face to see the characteristic "drop centers" lip joint.
The outer dual doesn't show the "drop center" lip joint of the true Firestone RH-5 widow makers. You will want to check the opposite face for a split lock ring.
For those who want to play along themselves, here is a good guide on rim identification that will help you ensure you have all the correct matching pieces on a safe rim, or if you have a RH-5 widow maker:
I don’t find a publication date on the fancy OSHA chart bmoran4 linked. But I’ll bet it’s from 1980 or later. This was the government’s solution to the RH-5°, and way to avoid the recall. More training, and posters in every shop. No worries if a rim came apart three miles down the road.
And typical of the government, the fancy chart is silent to the 17” and 18” widow makers, and to the demountable K-28s. Every F-3 and DRW F-4 ever built rolled out of the factory on widow makers. Stu
Thanks to all three of you for responding quickly. I knew they were widow makers 9 years ago when I bought my coe, but some recent responses here frightened me.
If people think they can be careful and still use them, it is a deadly error. I know 1 person who was killed by an exploding rim.
I sold my chassis to a fellow builder in Chicago, and warned him not to mess with them after he picked it up from me when the weather breaks.
Finally, believe it or not, there is a tire service here in Howell who still changes them. A bad disservice to the general public!
Regards, Mark
