I just got the 87 f150 with the 4.9L, when I start it up the starter you can hear spin but it doesnt usually crank over the motor on the first try, could it just be the actuator that pushes the starter out to engauge it or do I need to replace the starter its self.
Also, when it does start it usually revs up once and then either dies or almost dies, what can I do to get to to idle better when I start it up? It barely idles until I put it into gear but once its in gear it runs great. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
yep, the starter is not engaging, it is not being pushed out to meet the flywheel. i would just go buy a different starter. i do think they make repair kits for them if you can find one.
as far as the idle goes...... it seems idle problems are rampant on ford trucks. i would think that your idle would get worse when you load it up by putting it in gear with your foot on the brake? did you mean it idles fine with your truck in gear with your foot on the brake or driving down the road. first thing id check for an idle problem is the idle air control or IAC. it controls a small amount of air that bypasses the throttle body butterfly valve. the IAC is a long cylindrical selonoid on the throttle body. new ones arent cheap!
I mean that it idles poorly in park but as soon as its in gear it is fine, and I will check the IAC, that used to cause me problems on my Ranger and I ended up replacing it for like $60 from a dealer, are they more than that for the F150?
last time i was at the dealer i asked how much they wanted for one and they said something like $129.00. so i went to a parts store and they wanted around $70. i never did buy one. if you find a place to buy one cheap online post it here so i can get one.
