Severe Operating Conditions

I have a 2019 F250 6.7. The truck has 34000 miles and I have been using Motorcraft 10w 30. I will be hauling a heavy truck camper with 3000lb motorcycle trailer and am wondering if I should switch to the heavier oil recommended for severe operating conditions. All constructive advice will be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn’t worry, especially with the cold temps lately, the truck is overbuilt for the task at hand

Temperatures dictate what weight oil to use.
10w30 is shown to be good in the range of 0* to over 100*
Now, if you want more extreme protection, you could go to 5w40 full synthetic, I believe its temp range is -20* to over 100*.
In summer you could go to 15w40, temp range is 20* to over 100*.

I think I remember reading that the full syn 5w40 is also recommended for heavy hauling as well as temperature. What does your 5th wheel weigh and what are you running for oil?

I haul a number of different size trailers and have been using 10w30, either motorcraft or rotella.
But, that may change in the future, it's not the easiest oil to find.

I'm having a hard time finding it now, I thought there was a list of driving conditions that define severe service. I could be mistaken but some of those conditions were towing 1k miles (I interpret as meaning between oil changes), towing at max GVWR often, driving bellow a certain speed for a certain period of time (like stop and go driving), etc...basically, it is hard to not fall into one of those conditions.

For my 2019 they define it as follows:

That's it, thank you. So yeah, many owners would fall into that use type.

So, what is the general consensus? To switch, at this point, or not to switch. I just saw another thread on this topic and see mixed opinions. Oh well, I guess it's just another oil thread. I'm also wondering which oil might provide better fuel economy.

It takes very little to fall into severe duty. I switched to 5w-40 immediately. 10w-30 for fuel economy is a gimmick, no thanks.

Given the fact you have a F250, I am assuming you are looking at 10k to 10.8k of GVW giving you something around 2300-2700 pounds of payload. Google informed me your slide in tips the scales at 2641 pounds all by itself. So before you fuel up the truck your already pretty close to GVW. To me that is severe use, trips the third to last bullet point from above. IMHO of course so that and 3 bucks can't even get you coffee.

If it were me and mine, just run 5w40 year round no matter the criteria. It covers all bases. I see oil temps in the 240°+ range towing, so 5w40 full synthetic is ideal. Yes, it is harder to get ahold of locally for most, but it’s just a couple days wait online and a better option for not much more than Motorcraft 10w30 at Walmart. Just my .02

Thank you so much for your "HO" I have decided to switch to Rottella T6 5w30 for the reason you mentioned and 2 more bullets that get me. This was my inclination all along, it's just that I still have a gallon of 10w30 in the garage and I am squeaky cheap.

I switched over to Rotella T6 5W40 at 5k miles in on my 22 6.7. I tow our small 6000 lb camper, and most often times I am filling up with B20. It says right on the oil fill cap: "Severe Duty/Bio Fuel, SAE 5W40 API CJ4" so that's what I do.
