I am puzzled by a clacking sound (mind you, it is not a clanking sound or a clunking sound--"clacking" will do) in my '84 F150. I thought it might be the u-joints so I replaced them but to no avail. The clacking sound is coming from the rear of the truck. It seems to clack once for each rotation of the wheels. It occurs both when the clutch is engaged or disengaged. Pressing the brakes has no affect on it. It does not seem to clack in reverse.
It must be something with the wheels. Any ideas about what I am looking for? Thanks.
I have a Bronco that does the exact same thing. Tore apart transfer case, rear end, and replaced all u-joints. Got tired of wrenching and decided to drive it until it breaks. Nothing yet.
(by the way, thanks for giving me a name for that hard-to-describe noise)
Thanks for your help! The mystery is solved and the clacking is gone. I pulled the wheels and found that one of the brake adjuster cables was broken. It had torn the pads up pretty good. Did a brake job and she runs great. Thanks again.
I just discovered this website a couple of days ago. It has been extremely helpful. I picked up some good advice that has answered some other problems I had. Thanks for making a newbie feel welcome!
