I thought about cat and took it out to test it but same result .also tried it with 2 different air filters. now I have a brand new cold air intake and same result . . I will end up putting complete new exhaust system in in it without the cat and muffler but I want it running right first lol
Exhaust back pressure valve stuck closed?
MAP sensor? If you unplug a MAP sensor on a good running truck it will go into limp mode which is basically half the hp, but at least you get back home.
So today I had some time to mess around with the beast . first thing I did was put the new hpop in and the drove it to collect some data .did a video and posted the link above . next thing I did was check the fuel pressure . I had 70psi on idle and about 65-68 on WOT. that seems perfect to me . after that I hooked up a boost gauge and drove it again and she had a little boost but for sure not enough . the gauge went to about 7psi at WOT. after that I took it back and blew some air in the wastegate actuator to make sure that works and it does open and close like it supposed to . at this point its almost 100% that I have a major boost leak . so tomorrow I go down to home depot and get me everything to build me a leak tester like jleedog showed above. if anyone has another idea let me know please . i hope i can get her back to her glory soon .thank you all for your help .you guys are awesome .
If you are only getting 7 psi boost, the first thing to check is the exhaust up-pipes. They are notorious for leaking at the upper flange. Easy to spot due to the black streaks coming down the outside of the pipes. Bellowed up-pipes are the cure. I gained a full 1 to 1.5 mpg just by converting to them, outside of regaining all the boost back as well.
that's probably what it is . I bought a set of them before I knew early 99 was different .I bought the 99.5-03 pipes and they didn't fit .so I sent them back and didn't buy a new set yet. they are kind of hard to find on the early 99 .
Wait a minute. So you tried to install new uppipes but had to reinstall the originals? That’s almost guaranteed to leak. And leak very badly if you used the original gaskets.
If you have more time than money put Felpro 8194 exhaust gaskets in place of the OEM gaskets. Sealed up the exhaust manifold leaks until I put in proper bellowed uppies.
yes, there was some soot. they are leaking on both ends. I just checked it this morning. I can feel exhaust everywhere. I just ordered new pipes with doughnuts. They will be in on Sunday. that's for sure my issue. I could've had this issue fixed a while ago. I had new pipes but ordered the wrong one's last time. this time I ordered the early 99 ones lol. I will post an update soon as they're installed. thank you for all the help.
