Just finished my yearly oil change (~8K between last oil change) and as I put the oil filter wrench on the filter I noticed it was loose.
I'm pretty sure I tightened this oil filter down beyond hand strength last oil change.
I saw a recent new thread where the OP said it had fallen off.
so yeah, we definitely have to check.
I used to do tight as I could go by hand, plus 1/8 of a turn more with a wrench. Not sure if that is enough. Never personally had one go loose or fall off.
I've been changing my own oil for over 35 yrs and never had an oil filter become loose over time.
Was there any leaking around the top of the filter you found loose ?
I always just get mine as tight as I can with both hands on the filter which ends up pretty much like Dave said "one turn after gasket contact" & never had a loose one...knock on wood
My engine has I think it's 19th oil filter installed currently. I add clean oil to the gasket, hand tighten and it always requires a filter wrench to remove, so far so good.
Interesting to now have a couple of threads on this issue. I hand tighten and then put two hands on it to snug it down too.. Never ever have had an issue in 40+ years.

There was oily residue on the bottom of the oil pan. I didn't see evidence that oil was leaking down the oil filter.
I got about 11.5 qts of oil out after draining and put 13 qts in.
This time I tightened the oil filter a good full revolution with the oil filter wrench after it was snug. That SOB better not come loose.
I've only changed mine myself 3 times now. I make sure the old seal is gone, the new seal is lubed with some fresh oil and then go til snug and then about another half turn or so by hand. No issues so far. However, I did get the service department to do the very first oil change at 1200 miles and when it was time for the next oil change I wasn't sure that I was going to be able to get the filter they put on back off! I had to use a filter wrench to get it off and after I finally got it off the filter was pretty bent up and mangled! I don't understand why they put it on so tight, but it's just another reason I choose not to let them do anything that I can do!
The only time I ever had a filter loosen up was on a chev S-10 4x4, and it was in a ridiculous place to reach. I was only able to get my finger tips on it, reaching above the tire on the driver side. I'm positive I never had it tight enough.
I think this can happen when people don't ensure that the old filter gasket is removed from the truck before screwing on the new filter. Having a double gasket in there is very bad.
