sickly idle

evening,
i have a '93 xlt bronco w/ a 351, around 178k miles. when i start it up and drive somewhere (say to the store) shut it off and come out, the thing doesn't idle smoothly. this problem appeared soon after the purchase (last thanksgiving), and it has died on me a couple of times. when it does this, it revs up like normal start up then pulmets to almost to zero rpm, shakes violently bc it's about to die. then goes up to about 1500 rpm and repeats. the only way i stop this is to put it in drive with the emergency brake on- which isn't good. also, the interior lights fluctuate when it does this. my pops says it could be the spark plugs and distributor cap. i'm open to suggestions. -wb

Try a good tune up and make sure you have good clean battery terminals and alternator connections. Make sure you replace things like PCV valve and breather.

Might want to take a look see at the EGR and IAC as well, could be gummed up with crud and causing them to stick occasionally.

The last two would be a last resort thing and would probably have triggered some sort of code by now but not necessarily.

what do you mean by breather, as in intake? could it have something to do with my K-n-N filter?
