I have a 2012 F-150 4X4, 3.5 L Ecoboost I bought earlier this year with 57k miles. This winter I've noticed that when the rear wheels slip - not in 4X4 - I hear a chatter in the front of the truck. Not being able to find a post on this in the forums, I guess it must not be common or maybe it's a normal. It doesn't sound like I would expect. The dealer replaced the IWEs this spring. The 4X4 seems to work fine, except I still have issues with it sounding like something is still engaged for a while after turning off the 4H. (Putting it in 4A makes the noise go away). That all may be beside the point. What I'm wondering about before I take it back to the dealer is if this anyone else has had this issue and what did you do about it. Thanks!
The chatter you're hearing is the abs pump kicking in to prevent wheel slippage just like it does to keep them from locking up when you panic brake. It's normal.
The 4x4 issue could be anything from vacuum leaks to xfer case shift motor or module, wiring etc....
drivingbob can you post a video of the issue that you are talking about? While I don't disagree with RLXX1, it's also possible that you could have gotten a bad iwe or are also having a vaccum leak causing one of or both of the iwe's to not fully disengage. If that's the case and ignore you could over time cause more damage to the gear rings on the iwe and the wheel bearing causing both to need to be replaced. As of right now assuming that the dealer installed OE iwe's you should have a IIRC it's either a 12 month, or a 24 month parts warranty. Meaning that if your infact do have a defective iwe you should be able to get the repair done at no out of pocket cost. Just something to consider.
