I'd like to switch from narrow 700-17,5 tires to 16" radials on my 56 f250 for better handling, and more affordable tires. The problem is with radials you have to be Hercules to steer it!. Has anyone tried insalling a steering assist that would have to be spliced into the steering column? I know they sell new kits, but I don't want to spend that much. Someone suggested.a unit off a equinox or prius? .
Some of my Studebaker buddies have had pretty good luck using the electric power steering pumps from Volvos. A couple of the guys have put it on the Avanti's and my other buddy put it on a 58 Packard. So far so good.
One of the guys has his on a switch and only uses it in tight situations. Running down the highway he turns it off (don't ask me why...LOL).
I don't know much about the steering assist units but it sounds like a nice solution for you
Google something like electric PS conversion and you will get some threads about someone doing it. Seems like one guy used a setup from a Saturn he got at a salvage yard. I am curious also. Let us know how it goes!!
