Just bought a 62 4x4 292. PO told me he stopped driving because the "brain" on the ignition would get hot and it would quit till it cooled down. Well I just figured needed a coil. Well got it in the shop and low and behold a y-block dissy conveted to electronic ignition. An actual ford dissy with a pickup inside and a module. All ford parts. Not sure about the box though. Does anybody remember a conversion like this?
Never had luck with these smog era dizzys. Too much going on. Those modules are known to melt down, so folks would carry a spare in the glove box. IMHO I would find a points Dizzy and convert it to Pertronics 1 or 2 with a matching coil and a premium set of wires.
Oh no petronix. Hei small cap. Had best luck with those. Buy the mashined dissy and replace elecronics with acdelco parts. I had already ordered new stuff. And that is a points diss of a y block I was just wondering if anyone had seen or did a conversion like that. Taking parts out of a new one and putting them in an old one or if there was some kit back in the day. Yes it is a reman but still an original y block diss.
I looked in some old books I have and couldn't find a conversion exactly like the one you have. It is certainly not Ford Duraspark. Good Y block distributors are getting scarce hang on to that one. Beware of the made in China aftermarket distributors they are for the most part JUNK. Do what you wish but it's a y block no ignition system is going to make it anything more than what it would be with a set of points in there.
If anyone wants this dizzy and components I'll box it up and send it to you. If the 292 gives up going with a 390. Don't want it going away. First email with address can have it. Rogersuek@gmail.com.
The Dist that you have, if in good condition could be mated with a GM HEI module, or even a Chrysler box. I think they are both better than the Ford Dura spark.
You can find the wiring diagram for this on the inter-web.. Back before the internet, we converted a few of these, some what by trial and error.
This was an effort to escape from the troublesome Ford boxes, as these modules were more reliable, and cheaper.
We attached the module to an aluminum plate, about 4 inches square, for a heat sink, bolted it to the fire wall or inner fender, and wired them up.
My buddy worked as a mechanic and converted lots of them, for his customers.
I did a few, at the time, and still have two that are still in service with thousands of miles, and 30 plus years on the road.
Lots of luck to you.
Yes have done the same on IHC Scouts. I don't want it if anyone does let me know. Its a reman, when I don't know. In good shape. Guys saying worth keeping. I'm not going to. Scrap yard soon if no one wants it.
