Got an 88 bronco with the 5.0 and aod trans that is making noise on acceleration but only if u push hard on gas if u let it roll you won’t hear it. Sounds like a rattle initially thought was cat so I cut that out and was wrong then I thought was motor mounts and trans Mount maybe making fan hit shroud replaced those and still doing it driving me crazy inspected flex plate looks fine my last guess is torque converter? Anyone had one start making noise on acceleration only? If I’m in neutral I get no noise when I throttle, soon as it’s in gear and starts rolling the more you push on gas the more it starts rattling until you get up into maybe 25 mph noise goes away. Maybe someone can chime in? Thanks in advance

try putting it in manual 2 or even manual 1 and accelerate. does it go away?
Do you have snow on the ground?
I have this issue only in drive(Or OD as in my case) because my passenger rear wheel doesnt have brakes, so the wheel is turning when im stopped and i think it freaks out the computer (Or something) because it registers vehicle speed.. im guessing but 1 and 2 eliminate it, and i just shift into drive once im moving 10+ mph
Check your body mounts and exhaust clearance. When the body mounts get old, they get soft and collapse, and then the exhaust rubs the firewall when the engine moves from the torque.
I have had loose exhaust shielding make some interesting noises when the resonance is just right. Something to check.
Other thoughts include exhaust leaks, AIR crossover tube leaking, and detonation. You can run higher octane gas and see if the noise changes or goes away, which would indicate detonation.
Usually something banging on the firewall is not subtle.
Truck is set at 10 btdc and the exhaust doesn’t have any shielding and the cat shields are solid and not loose. Gas tank is full of Lucas treated 87 but I ran half a tank of 91 I’m pretty sure it’s not detonation because truck runs fine other than at takeoff and only if u mash the pedal down if u just barely push it it won’t make the noise the harder you push the more you hear it but only until about 25 mph then it’s normal. Sounded like loose cat element to me at first cause I’ve had that problem in the past but these cats are new on this truck
I’ll get to looking at those u joints I replaced a worn trans Mount so maybe the worn Mount caused u joints to wear as well thanks
DId you see what I said.. you dont have to think its likely, but just trying the other gear starts can help you verify its not a different kind of issue
Moved the truck this morning for street sweeping and used 1st gear wasn’t hearing the noise but also looked at body mounts here is a picture of the fronts
