I got two 76 F-250 2wd pickup from a some guy. I don't know what kind of 3/4 ton rear axle they are. Can anyone tell me how to tell the differentin them & what kind they are. I know that the gear ratio mit not work for my 4x4 F-250 78 supercab. I will tell you what I know to this point.
first axle= Came out for a 76 f-250 2wd with 360ci manual 4 speed granny. Look to have 2 in. wide, in bord drum brakes. Can not read tag on axle.
Second Axle= Some as the first axle, but has a 460ci alomatic engine & tranny. Look to be the 3in. wide inbord drum brakes. There no tag.
Also need to now what can of front axle I have. Came off a 79 F-250 4x4 super cab XLT. Gottes the big hubes and daul piston capers.
the rear should be a D60. the front should have a cast in the lower right side that states what it is. If it's got big hubs either a D44HD or D60. If you do a forum search you'll find lots of info on how to ID the front Axle
I found the ID tag off of both of my axles. The back axle needed alot of cleaning to see thr letters. Now I need to find out what they mean, The rear axle tag reads off as this.
3 31 D6TA FJB
603713 4
The front axle tag is like this.
4 10 D8TA ACD
610 23 8
I Think that the 4 10 & 3 31 is the gear ratio of the Axle.
I Think D6TA & D8TA mean that they were made in 76 & 78.
The rest I don't know that it means. If you had those two axles, which of the gear ratio would you keep?
And do any people know if the ford used two different lengh of axles. Becaues my front axle seems that it longer then my back axle. Or is it just me. I measured from the center of the tire tred. the front was 37 1/2in and the rear is 35in.
thanks for helping.
You better not engage the 4wd if that is the gear ratio. You are gonna rip some stuff apart. You will do significant damage to the hubs, transfer case, and driveshaft.
The gear ratio will be the same if they are different by the time the truck is done. Write now the truck is in about five hundred pices in my mom & dad grarge.
rotate the pinion count the number of times the pinion spins until the axle makes one revolutionif its a one wheel wonder have someone hold one wheel best way to tell if you have a 60 or a 44 is to look at them the 60 will be BIG like your rear axle the 44 will be visibly smaller about the same size as a normal car diff
