Hello, I recently bought an 89 f250 with the 460 motor, it only has 79,000 original miles. However when I first got it, the pickup was idling rough, stalling out on acceleration and dying at stop signs and red lights as well as running rich. I went through and changed the fuel filter, the coolant temp sensor, idle air control valve, map sensor, fuel pressure regulator and cleaned the throttle body. This took care of the rough idle and stalling it runs very smooth now and increase fuel mileage as well as increased the performance a bit. however, there is still something not quite right. On a cold start it runs perfect and no issues. But once the engine gets to normal operating temp and I stop somewhere when I come back out and start it, even though it starts right up it will die on me. Sometimes a couple of times it doesn’t matter if I rev it up or not, it will happen both if just idling in park or if I put it in gear. Seems like it is probably still an air/fuel problem but I’m at a loss of what it could be at this point. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m at a point where I’m not wanting to put too much more money into this thing. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
I had the same problem on a 5.0L mustang. I changed the ECU and it fixed the problem. You might try opening up your ECU and inspect for swollen/leaking capacitors. Its a common problem that can be found on this forum if you search for it.
You sure spent a lot of money replacing parts. Did you ever perform the key on engine off (KOEO) self test to check for active and stored codes? In addition, did you test any of those parts to see if they were bad before replacing them? Unfortunately new parts are so hit and miss that you might have removed a good part with one that has already failed.
The check engine light does not need to be on for there to be codes. I suggest that you check for codes before replacing anything else.
I idled the engine to operating temperature and did the paper clip test this morning and got codes 11 and 12.
11 says system passed
and 12 says idle Speed Control motor or Air Bypass not controlling idle
As stated in the second post, I would investigate the ignition control module. They can be tested electrically. I've also read on forums, where people carried an ice pack to cool the module while the warm engine symptoms were happening. Never tried that myself.
