Having a problem. My 83 f150 runs fine when I’m up to about 40 mph. But as soon as I take it up to 55ish, the engine starts making more of a clicking sound rather than a low grumble. The first time this problem came up, I heard it making the sound I described. And the engine overheated. Since then, I have made sure to put in more coolant and ensure that the coolant level was fine. Even though, it still makes this sound when I get up past 45ish. I’m not exactly a sophisticated mechanic, so I need a diagnosis here
If it runs fine otherwise, you may have just "cooked" some of the oil in the engine and one of the lifters is sticking, making the ticking noise. You can buy a can of Rislone and add it to the engine oil and drive it a month or two and see if that takes care of it. There are a lot of detergents in the Rislone and that can loosen stuff up inside the engine.
