Air Cleaner replacement

Had truck serviced at dealer....oil change/tire rotation. Was told they recomend air cleaner...at addtion charge of $140.....

Ordered Motocraft filter from Rock Auto for $35 delivered. Now... should I just change it...or wait for truck to tell me its needed.... 25000 miles.

$140 for an air filter replacement? Highway robbery!

I'd replace the filter when the air filter restriction guage tells you (assuming you have a Power Stroke).

You also have a vacuum type gauge on the air filter housing, with a reset button. But in my opinion I would at least look at it and make sure its still intact (had a squirrel chew through mine from the back side foam while camping in the woods) and at 25k miles and for $35, replace it.

No, I believe 20+ trucks don't have the restriction meter on the housing, my 22 doesn't.

My 21 does, it seems the 22's don't. Not sure when it was removed exactly. Both have the status in the maintenance information on the dash though.

I've seen/read stories where people have been shown totally crapped out air and cabin air filters, by dealerships and service facilities, in an attempt to sell a service. It almost appears that the shady ones must keep old filters by their toolboxes for just this purpose. So whenever I change a filter...air/oil/cabin...I always write the date of change on it with a sharpie in the hopes of catching someone, sometime. So far it hasn't happened to me. Maybe they've just been stories...

X2 on this. Always best to look at it on regular intervals.

My dealer did the same.....but only wanted to charge me $90.

I inspect mine every oil change and change it every 3rd oil change (22500 miles) just to be on the safe side.

Take them out and mark them. Then if they show you one without the mark walk straight over and show them your filter!

You must have been skimming again... That's why all of my filters are marked.
