It all comes down the amount of crap and luxuries you add to the truck and then get a weight on the truck. More you add less you can carry or tow no matter what the generic brochure number claims.

My derated F250 FX4 is right around 3k payload (give or take 25 lbs one way or the other, I forget), the FX4 package in itself takes little away from payload but it does and everything added adds up as someone else pointed out.

The FX4 USED to include a locking axle, but hasn't for a few years now.

On the FX4, it was Electronic Locking differential, so the driver could pull out on the 4x4 selector ****, and lock the rear axle. I had many situations where doing that was enough, and I didn't need to go in to 4wd.
Dually's have Limited Slip Differentials, but they are NOT Electronic Locking selectable by the driver.

All SRW FX4's have the locking rear diff, none have limited slip. That is because the locking rear diff is a forced (required) option to allow the FX4 package option. Not sure about DRW, maybe the FX4 package forces the LSD rear since locking rear is not available on DRW. Obviously a non FX4 Super Duty can have whatever diff option is chosen and available for that particular configuration.
This is the first year that the FX4 package actually has a reason to add it, although, it is still way overpriced, in fact, even more so than the previous years. Prior to the 23's you could add the skid plates ala carte for $100, now though it appears you can't, so you're stuck with the $500 FX4 package! The only reason to get the FX4 package now is if you want skid plates. But as has been mentioned, all the FX4 package gets you is the skid plates, a sticker, the hill descent button and "off road tuned shocks" which aren't anything special. You're better off getting a set of Bilstein or Fox shocks after market. All that other stuff that people think comes with the FX4 package doesn't... 4X4, electronic locker, AT tires, etc... those are all things that you must add to your build before it will allow you to add the FX4 package, and none of them are any less expensive, or function any better/differently because of the FX4 package.
And if you are adding it for "resale value" then just pick up the $10 FX4 sticker from eBay before you sell it... the folks wanting it won't actually know what it is... lol.
