In the past, I have been a huge fan of Wix filters, but as you said, their pricing is forcing me to look at more economical options. Particularly in the case of cabin filters. One day when I get really bored, I just may try building a little wood box and using household furnace filter media to make a cost effective cabin filter that would cost me about $3.00 for enough filter media to last me years.
I wonder if a guy could just carefully disassemble an old one and replace the media with as you say, furnace media instead of trying to build a box
I'm guessing that the more you filter the more air flow you lose. So how do you determine the worth of the filters? Do you want an N100 filter that can scrub the air or no filter that gives maximum airflow?

On a hot day if I have to keep turning the fan up to stay cool there is too much filtering going on....
But what about the nice weather days when we drive with our windows open? Hmm, so much for the cabin air filter, maybe this is the reason I see people driving their cars wearing N95 masks
IDK. I never driven with the windows down but if I did, you would turn the HVAC off, I would think.
Not sure about the N95 masks but Asian people have had a tendency to wear them even before Covid but I believe it was pollution?
Weather the HVAC is on or off, as long as the windows are open the "contaminants" are still entering the interior and your lungs. I assume when its nice outside the majority of motorists have the windows open....bypassing the cabin air filter as to why I removed mine years ago, its useless
I have tried a couple different ones. The factory one went away at 20k miles for a Bosch, which does indeed restrict airflow. I went back to a Motorcraft at 40k miles and the airflow is definitely better.
I could not discern any difference between the "better" filter over the standard one but I have never been fearful of breathing regular old outside air....lol

IDK. Most I see are up. Most of the down windows are on cars so ratty, I don't think AC works or they are convertible cars.
I have never driven with my windows down except when the AC failed but I got that fixed ASAP. I have air from outside come in via HVAC.
Huh, ya learn something new everyday.
having air come through the vents is nothing like having a nice breeze coming through the open window. So you never just open the window and let the air flow through the truck, hand out the window, tunes going on a nice mild day?
