Nope, thrusts down on the block.
When the gear is properly installed, the cut on the gears and the direction of rotation will pull the distributor gear down against the support (distributor gear thrust face) in the block.
OK then how in the hell is this thing Bayside on 14° yet after using the throttle it’s 46° higher even if I turn the idle down to 500 with a screwdriver and this is all with no vacuum.
I was thinking that with the clockwise rotation that it would pull the distributor gear down instead of up, which is why I am freaking confused, but I’m going to measure all the slop anyway as soon as the snow melts off my hood.
Why don't you complete your setting of timing including with vacuum?
Is the vacuum advance also adjustable on that unit?
You don't have any vacuum to pull it back.
unless ford is different than everything else ive ever worked on, vacuum advances timing. Not pulls it back to zero. Because this is a gm "style" unit i will think it is the same. So adding vacuum while trying to time, will add degrees to idle. That is why i suggested using a ported source for vacuum in my earlier post.
And since vacuum advances timing, and more timing gives more rpm, and more rpm give more mechanical and pulls more vacuum, you get more timing...it becomes a vicious cycle. Never use manifold vacuum for advancing timing.
If you have a 750 idle you have a given amount of vacuum and therefore a certain advance. You go from park to reverse/drive and rpm may drop and so does vacuum. Timing falls and no you have potential for a stall.
Base idle is set Before ANY vacuum is applied. I’ve been repairing cars for decades, I’ve been ASE certified (ex wife bitched about no credentials) since 2004 picked up at UC Berkeley..
but this distributor has be by the Ballz. I have properly timed thousands of Chevrolet’s and ford vehicles throughout my career, but this one bugs the **** out of me

it may be poor tolerance inthe distributor itself. Might have to go to an older style ford unit
