well its winter here in wounderful arizona and ive been using my hearter the last few weeks. i just noticed if i switch to the defrost/floor position the air compressor engages. i also believe its engaged when switched to just defrost positon. thats with the heat control turned up hot. the compressor wont engage if i just have the setting to vent and the blower on, just with defrost and defrost/floor. is that how it suppose to work, seems like a waiste on the air compressor.

Yeah, the compressor cycles on/off when using yuor defrost; this is to circulate the refrigerant and oil throughout the system during the months when you don't normally use your A/C, thereby keeping the o-ring seals oiled, preventing leaks. Other people have also suggested that the A/C dries out the air coming into the cab, so you don't blow moist air onto your windshield.

Yeah, the a/c is supposed to come on with the defroster. It clears a foggy window much better than if the a/c didn't come on. I don't think it has anything to do with circulating the refrigerant in the off-season, because it comes in handy on rainy summer days too when the windows fog up.
