I need to get door handle painted for my truck, specifically the plastic plate behind the handle. About 4x10 inches or whatever. Not much but I know there is prep work and mixing and probably 3-5 coats or so.
For those with experience, about how much would you expect to pay for getting something like this done?
I've called a couple body/paint places near me and so far I've only gotten voice mailboxes (Full). It's not something I really want to bother shopping around to get the best possible price but just want a target price to know if I should look further.
Last time (6 years ago) I bought enough color base coat and clear coat for a bumper cover that I got at Pull-a-part it cost a little over $200 for just the paint (includes the Part A, Part B (aka "hardener") and solvent that is selected based on temperature during application. We're talking just a cup each of base coat and a cup of clear. I did the prep and painting.
To hire a body shop? Wild guess... at least $500 or so...again that's a wild guess. You have a small area but there's still the prep work (identify, buy, and mix correct paint) test the color, apply 2-3 passes, then clean up and mix the clear followed by more clean up and "shop fees" and the paper work, etc. And it takes some skill to do it right.
Finally got through to Cailiber Collision that only works with insurance claims but they recommended another place who said $45. Cheap enough I'm going to get some other brackets made and do it all at the same time.
I guess for $45 it's worth a gamble but I wouldn't expect much for that price.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Sounds like a rattle can paint job (Duplicolor), they possibly have left over color previous job or the shop is coincidentally in the process of repairing a truck that has the same color of paint and they are just adding the backing plate to their job. I'd sure ask the shop a lot more questions on how they plan on doing it and their process.
Last paint work I had done was maybe 5 years ago. It involved removal of the windshield (glass guy), some rust prep/repair in the windshield frame. They ended up spraying the entire roof (compact extra cab) and blended down the cab some. Total, including glass, was $600. That was at a body shop recommend and used by some of the local dealerships. So yeah, if you brought the part in and its not some crazy one off paint color I would expect it to be fairly inexpensive.
