Recently found out cars and trucks with 390 motors have diffrent distributers gearing at least , now I have to replace the cam as it eats the drive gear off the distributer end . My carb is an edelbrock 650cfm , motor is a stock 390 out of a 66 ltd . What would be a good cam for this application ? motor was only on the street a short while seemed to make pretty good power , top end has significant wear rod & mains are worn but seem alright . thanks in advance for your info .

You may have a bad gear on the cam. There is absolutley no difference in distributor gears on the FE engines. Some of the comp cams have had this problem in the past. They were eating distributor gears.
My Crane roller cam required a hardened steel or bronze dizzy gear.
It has to do with the cam material. But, I think you would have to get a roller or radical flat tappet cam to need the upgraded gear.
Maybe somebody upgraded your dizzzy gear in the past to work with a harder cam?? And now it's too hard for your cam.
