My 54 still has the original 6v+ ground wiper and heater motor. My quetion is will these work with 12-ground? I imagine the motors may turn backwards but I am afraid to connect power to them. frayed cloth wires and age. they may not even work I dont know. PS the person who did the conversion used a volt-a-drop I want 12 volt neg ground for all. Any info or ideas would be great, thanks. Kurt Y-blocks rule!!!
I asked the same question about the rotation of the fan motor as well as the starter when I went from positive to negative ground in my '49 F1. (I still have a vacuum wiper.) It turns out these motors aren't permanent magnet motors, but are wired with a series field. If you change the polarity of the power going to them, you change it for the field AND the armature and the motor will turn the same direction. I assume you're wiper is the same, but if it turns the wrong way would you even know or care?
I installed a volt-a-drop which is no more than a ballast resistor to limit the current through whatever circuit it is hooked to. If it has the same resistance as your fan motor, the motor will see 6 volts. The problem is your wiper motor will probably pull less current and would see a higher voltage except on those cold and rainy days when both would see less. I doubt you'd have any problems at all with this set-up.
Be careful, the resistor will get hot. Tape up all frayed wires, they can cause fires.
Good luck,
Johann
