I have an 89 351w with 125K miles. My question is did ford make a 3 speed automatic in 89? When driving my bronco it only shifts 2 times. Each shift is very strong and rough. Just wondering if anyone knows?
HI, I'm pretty sure that your Bronco has the E4OD. If you crawl under the truck it should say what it is on the tranmsission pan. Also, I beleive the E4OD is a 4-speed with Overdrive. So technically it's a 5-speed! Hope this helps.
Every '89 351 Bronco I have seen with an automatic has been a C6. Three speed. Durable trans, highway mileage just won't be as good and drivetrain noise will be higher. But a good trans.
Look at your transmission gear selector. If it has D-2-1 you have a 3-speed. If it has O-3-L (or somthing like that) you have the AOD 4-speed overdrive. If the "D" has a circle around it followed by the 2-1 then you have the electronic overdrive. The telltale sign for the electronic overdrive is the "overdrive off" button on the end of the gearshift lever.
Yeah, but that only shows as far back as 1991. I know for a fact my Bronco has teh E40D!
Bronco351 I never said that you didn't have an E4OD, I just stated that they were optional. These electronic 4 speeds strated to appear in 1986 as an option, they became standard in 1991.
I have a 1990 with AOD. On the indicator it has a D with a circle around it, a D, and a 1. I thought the C6 was not used after the mid 80s but a retrofit is possible.
