Is this Windshieldwiper like motor the likely culpret? If so, I can handle that kind of thing. But anything inside the case is likely beyond my skill level.
When the push button system is not used for a while the motor can stop working. Tap on the shift motor with a hammer see if it will free it up. The four wheel drive system has no control of the automatic or manual hubs.
Is that the reason the system isn’t working? Is the shift motor stuck? Is there a blown fuse or broken wire? Hard to say from this side of the screen….
Until the hubs were replaced I had no way of really testing the 4x4. It's one of those never-ending to-do list kinda trucks.
Not exactly. With the case in 2wd you should be able to turn the front driveshaft by hand. Put the transfer case in 4high - now the front driveshaft is “locked”. In 4 low you will have the gear reduction. None of that needs the hubs locked.
I would get rid of that electronic shift and put a manual shift transfer case in.
For what reason? I used to have a ‘94 Bronco with a push button transfer case and auto hubs. The transfer case worked flawlessly. As I said in a previous post, the problem with the shift motor is when it does not get used often enough. I worked at a Ford dealership in the mid 90’s. Every Winter we would see, mostly Explorers, come in with inoperable four wheel drive. Tapping on the shift motor would free up the brushes in the motor and get it working again.
Don’t use your power windows for 3/4 of the year or longer and then try to use it one day. It probably won’t work either.

Electric shift always fails at the worst possible time, it is more trouble to diagnose and more expensive to fix, also even when it is working right it takes longer to shift than a manual t case does not to mention you get a neutral with the manual transfer case which comes in handy if you ever need to tow your vehicle. No advantage at all to the electric shift, only disadvantages and more complications. I have a Ranger right now that I am converting to a manual shift transfer case.
You can unbolt the motor from the transfer case and let it hang. Push the button to see if it is shifting to both 4 high, 4 low and back to 2 high. Yes the lights will come on when it is in a 4wd position
I took the motor off the transfer case and had someone push the button. The engine was off but the key was in the ON-position. The shifter was in Neutral.
The shift motor did not move at all. I even gave it some persuasion with a hammer. Nada.
The wiring harness would not come apart w/o a lot of prying. I was at a bad angle or I'd have unplugged / plugged it back in.
Your shift motor is likely bad , research in the forums , you can rebuild/clean yours up. Some just purchase a new motor .Its been a while since I had mine apart ,but they are rebuildable TR
There is actually a test you can perform now to see what is actually wrong.9/10 times its the actuator motor .#1 FIND YOUR PROCESSOR Board . On my 92 bronco it is in the passenger kick panel.it has a two pin harness attatched to it on the left side, remove that two pin harness . Next turn your ignition on acc. Now you can push the white square button on the bottom edge of your processor board and it will turn on a red led light next to the bottom , If the red light flashes this means you have a problem with your actuator motor ,if the red light stays bright this means your have problem with your processor board . Good luck TR
