Smog Pump/Air pump

1994 F150 5.0

Hello all,

Been trying to remove the air pump and then open it so I can lubricate the bearing. It has started to squeak at cold start. It does spin 90% freely although there is some resistance 10% of the rotation.

Tried every combo of extensions sockets and wrenches and cannot get the bottom bolt loose.

There is what looks to be a threaded insert at the bottom of the air pump see pic,

Is it possible to drill a small hole in this threaded insert, shoot some lube in there and then seal it up with some gasket material?

The air pump uses carbon vanes, and injecting oil in the case will destroy them. They're designed to run dry. However, there are two bearings on the ends of the case that like to dry up and squeak. Ive taken one apart many years ago and ended up destroying it in the process. Might just be easier and cheaper to buy a new one.

Just bought one today (remanufactured) for $195 at O'Reilly.

Thanks for the replies but i just cant get the damn lower bolt off so i can remove it. Thats why I'm looking for alternatives

Have you tried heating the bolt and wicking paraffin wax in toward the threads?

You can’t get the bolt out of the pump? Have you tried removing the nut on the other end of the bracket?

Tried heat twice and penetrated oil.

I see that you just removed the alternator bracket and then the pump comes with it? I guess thats an option as well

So went back at it again finally and I was able to get the pump out by removing the alternator bracket that also holds the smog pump.

This was a hell of a lot easier vs just trying to remove the two bolts that secure the smog pump.

The smog pump is definitely much more trouble than it's worth! Once they get contamination inside of them such as "dirt", they are not happy as the vanes which push the air through the engine are riding on the outer walls of the pump. I used to have to work on large air pumps for a waste treatment system. they were basically the same type of blower but on a much larger scale as they were driven by 50 HP motors. They would squeak and squawk from time to time and they would have to be torn apart and thoroughly cleaned and then they would run quiet for a couple more years. I have never seen the inside of the incoming air filter for the smog pump that sits up on the inner fender. I don't know if they can be restored or not.

Reading around the internet most people end up breaking the vanes or other things in the pump when they take it apart.

I was able to rebuild mine by carefully taking off the back plate and carefully pulling the shaft that is attached to the plate out of the various rods it was slid through.

cleaned it out with carburetor cleaner and some fine sandpaper to scrub out the carbon. Followed with wd40 to help clean out somemore, finally used bearing grease on the bearings.

Pump turns much quieter now, no more squeaking or squealing
