1996 ranger 4wd problems

1996 ranger 4wd problems
My 4.0 rangers 4wd wont engauge. When i turn the switch i hear the hub lock or so it sounds but no 4wd. I figured this problem out last time i was driving on the beach. The front tires didnt spin at all just the rear.
