Time to replace clutch assembly as my last one has less than 10,000 miles on it.......don't want to use the same re-builder again. I remember folks on this forum mentioning a re-builder that got a consensus on doing it well. Does anyone have suggestions? Thank you in advance for any help. tim
Gentlemen, thank you for the reply's. I will follow up. Concerning the early failure, I believe one of the pressure plate fingers lost adjustment. Clutch no longer dis-engages cleanly having a bit of tug along with some chatter at release. Thx again, tim
Can a clutch kit not be bought new for your specific drivetrain? i know some of these old trucks can't get basic parts anymore(waterpumps etc)
I have a '56 f100 with the 223ci and 3spd light duty column shift; I bought the first clutch from NAPA and it chattered horribly, but i just drove it like that for 10 years thinking I, 1) didn't know how to drive old trucks, or 2) I had broken-in the clutch incorrectly and it was therefor permanently flawed.
In 2021 I bought a replacement clutch kit with lifetime warranty from Autozone for $190, the truck drives as smooth as you'd expect, zero chatter, no issues whatsoever. It drives as smooth as my modern fuel injected Honda 5spd.
I believe Ft Wayne has changed. They can rebuild if it's something they cannot find or rebox. Haven't used them personally and had always planned to if needed. Shipping should figure into a rebuild also.
5851a, Ft Wayne was the tip I was looking for and had remembered good reviews from forum members. The shipping costs stretched the viability of that option.
So as MOROT suggests, I have a new clutch coming, and I will hope for the best. After 40 odd years of this truck, the last two clutches have been crap.
