Melted Plastic

Hi Guys,

I have a 2001 expy with 5.4 had a flowmaster cat back installed about a year and a half ago and love it. The other day i came out and noticed the black plastic trim above where the exhaust tip is was melted all the way through to the paint on the truck. I couldnt believe it. I figure if something like this was gonna happen because of heat from the tip it would have happened a long time ago. Anybody else experience this problem.

It must be heat from hot gases, if the metal itself can't touch the plastic during acceleration or braking. Adding an extension so the gases exit well beyond the body panel by an inch or two is my only suggestion. Why now? Could a hanger have broken or slipped to allow the pipe to move inboard so the tip is now closer? Check all the hangers from the cat on back.

Excessive heat should not be a problem otherwise if you are using regular 87 octane fuel with no additives. Are you using any?

I once used an additve called EnviroMax in my old Jeep Cherokee that gave me about 20 more hp and 5mpg better mileage... created so much heat it burned out the O2 sensors, the exhaust manifold, the headers, down pipe and cat all in two months of towing. Very expensive lesson.
