I really like the look of the original 53-55 cluster, but I'm not happy with its performance. I bought all new gauges and speedo from Mid-fifty. The odometer doesn't work now and the needle bounces around some. I've lubed the speedo and cable and it's no better. When it was working it was still kinda hard to tell exactly what speed I was going.
So I'm kicking around changing to a 5 gauge set up or maybe a Dakota digital cluster (pricey).
Older build with Dakota Digital insert...may have to upgrade with a newer unit if this 56 project ever sees the light of day....
One of the biggest gripes I have with the slant cab dash clusters are that they are not recessed...if someone ever recessed the cluster on a 53-55 F100 they would be the talk of the town.
I enjoy playing with wood, so I cut several panels of different wood cut to fit inside a butchered 55 panel. I wound up using the cherry panel. I used Auto Meter gauges which have functioned well.
Dakota Digital is in the town I live in (Sioux Falls, So Dak). I toured their factory a couple years back prior to the pandemic shut down when I was looking at a dash for my 70 Challenger. Nice set up, great people. I will probably still go with one for my challenger, just need to get the 55 finished up first.
