Red face 401 - EGR Flow Insufficient

I have a 98 Mountaineer 5.0 V8 (same engine as Explorer) with the Check Engine Light on. This problem has occured about every 2 years since we bought this auto. The current error code is 401 EGR flow insuffcient. Local repair shop replaced the EGR valve but the problem persists. I saw an old post about cleaning the throttle body / EGR ports? This sounds like what was done about 2 years ago for the same problem. Is this something that I can do with normal tools or should I just bend over and let the dealer pound the dollars out of my pocket?

Sounds as though your local repair shop already took your money, will they honor their repair. Most often the flow issue is with the ports for the EGR are blocked off due to carbon build-up. To check apply vacuum to EGR port while the engine is running and see if engine dies or really slows down in RPM. More than likely it won't. If your mechanically inclined you can repair it with no cash, just remove the air plemum and EGR valve and clear ports. GOOD LUCK.

I think it's your DPFE or PFE acting up. Replace that sensor and see if the CEL comes back on. I had the same code and it was the DPFE sensor went bad, throwing a P0401 code.
