Duraspark installation question????????
1. I have the 86 coil and a Duraspark coil. Can I use either one or do I need to use the Duraspark one. I would think that the 86 should put out a equal or greater spark?
2. The connector to the Duraspark coil is loose. Can it be tweaked or is there a replacement available?
3. With the GM module do I need a resistor in the circuit or run 12 volts?
hopefully that answered 1 & 3 if you use the stock coil i would say you wouldn't need to worry about 2..unles you meant tfi instead of dspark
Why? My 86 has a lot of wiring problems and there is evidence that an idiot was under the hood. Lots of splices (twisted and taped) and bare wires skinned back to test I guess. The wires coming out of the TFI (I think it is a TFI) have been taped and soaked in grease. I am replacing the motor and have a Duraspark II which is supposed to be better than the TFI. At the very least it looks like it hasn't been abused. I do not have the Duraspark module or wiring harness so the GM HEI module is the least expensive and easiest way to go. Along with the Ignition change I'm putting on a early model carb. Why? The 86 carb is a piece of garbage and has been rebuilt once. Ford put more BS on this engine than I have ever seen. I just want it to crank and run good.
John,
Sounds good. My 86 coil looks like a transformer with a the Hi-voltage coil terminal looking like a spark plug. Does that sound like a TFI? The wiring couldn't be any simpler especially since I don't need a resistor. Which wire did you use for the 12v feed for the coil?
